I'm Struggling

I am just now getting back from the gym. I was scheduled to run 4 miles this afternoon. I decided to do it on the treadmill as I am finding it difficult to run at home unless it is 10:00 at night. If I do that I don't end up getting to bed until 12 or 1 and then back up at 6 am to get ready for work. Anyways......I went to the gym to run my 4 miles. I only made it to 2 miles!

I am confused. I can run forever outside uphill and downhill, but when it comes to the dang treadmill I get all flustered and can't get very far. I mean I have done 3 and 4 miles on it before, but it feels torturous.

DO any of you runners have this problem??? Or is my mind just not letting me get past it??

I'm struggling and I need your help!

  1. I think a lot of people have this promblem. The treadmill is also a lot harder on your knees.

  2. There is something weird about the distance on treadmills. It seems like going anywhere takes FOREVER!!! Maybe it's the lack of scenery? who knows? but I'd take the 2 miles as a big success.

  3. I love your new picture by the way. Look at your face and how much slimmer it looks.

As for the TM vs. running outside thing, my personal opinion is that it is a mind thing. The TM is so much more boring and you feel like you aren't getting anywhere and you get bored and frustrated b/c you think you aren't getting anywhere and it seems like it takes forever. That is just affecting your mind and your thought process with it. I used to hate running on a TM then I realized if I wanted to train for my marathon that it would really benefit me to try to enjoy it as much as I could since several runs would be on the TM in the bad or cold weather. I just finally sucked it up and started to change my thinking with it. I also make sure I have an ipod or maybe a TV to watch. Also, change the speed and incline from time to time to spice things up and make it not quite as boring. Obviously, running outside is SO MUCH better and so much more enjoyable but the TM doesn't have to be as bad as you think it is. Try to change your thinking. Give it some time and you most likely will get used to it so that it is at least bearable.
